Sing
By Marea67
About: Sarah and Joe
Rate: G
Prompts: The song “Sing” by the Carpenters, AU, character: Sarah
Disclaimer: Brothers & Sisters is not mine, I know. Stop rubbing it in.
Summary: AU – What if Sarah had forgiven Joe?
*****
“Is there any particular reason why you’re listening to “Sing” by the Carpenters?” Sarah asks, entering the garage, looking for Joe and finding him fighting with her old record-player.
“Maybe some inspiration?” He tries. Sarah looks doubtful.
“Alright, to tell you the truth, I have been asked to make a jingle for some wash-powder. Not my thing, I know, but it's money and ...”
“Nothing?”
“Nope. Total blank. ... But if I can land this, it would mean a lot to me.”
“Maybe you're trying too hard.... So what is the image they want?”
“Dependable, it cleans good, it’s the solution for all women in America....”
“A lot more men nowadays do the laundry, you know.” Sarah points out. “Maybe you should listen to something more radical...” She suggests.
“Such as..?” Joe asks, wondering what Sarah is talking about. Sarah sighs.
“If you ever tell anyone I have albums of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath I’ll divorce you.” She warns.
Joe looks astonished as Sarah picks out one box and opens it to show her hidden collection. Album-covers showing skulls, bones, snakes, bikes stare at him.
“You’re such a mystery to me sometimes.” He laughs, appreciating her choice. “How did you ever manage to mix The Carpenters and Iron Maiden?”
“Shhh,” She laughs in return. “The Carpenters were my dad’s secret crush... So, whenever I wanted something from him, I’d ‘soften’ him by singing their songs,....” Sarah reminisces.
“You would SING??? ... No wonder he would give in to you... Anything to make you stop.” Joe’s laughter roars through the garage.
Sarah gives him a foul look, but then smiles and leaves him there to finish her cleaning in the kitchen. But once inside the smile vanishes from her pretty face and is replaced by a frown. She’s happy now, she can laugh again and enjoy being with Joe again, feeling she made the right choice in trusting him and taking his word over that of Holly and Rebecca.
That night, when Julia was giving birth to her children, she had sat there in that hospital and remembered the birth of Paige and Cooper. And Joe by her side. Always by her side. She had grown so used to have him around that she had taken him for granted. So, missing him terribly, she had called him.
That call had made her realize that he was the love of her life and that she would forgive him for kissing Rebecca. However, when she told him that, Joe only got more upset, insisting once again that the kiss had been started by Rebecca and this time she had listened to his words. She had seen his pain. She had felt that he wanted her and she had taken her husband’s side.
Of course this means that Justin is not talking to her anymore, because he’s on Rebecca’s side, but then, he was very close to his half-sister from the first time he saw her, so Sarah figures that only time can tell if their relationship can be fixed. ... Or maybe she should take the first step...?
Yes, she can do that. She could call him and casually asks how he is. Tell him that she’s happy with Joe, that she can forgive Rebecca, let go of the past and move on. Move past this and hope he feels the same. The only thing that can happen is that he hangs up... Yes, tomorrow, first thing, she’ll call him and start mending the fences...
And satisfied with her decision, she turns on her radio. And she cannot help but smile at the sheer coincidence of hearing that song a second time today, because the first thing she hears is the Carpenters and she smiles and hums along. “Don’t worry that it’s not good enough, for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song....”
THE END
