“Care to tell me what is bothering you?” Kevin questions as he puts down his napkin.
“You can’t guess?” Scotty’s voice is nothing more than a sneer. Something that surprises Kevin. He doesn’t get why Scotty is angry. They have an evening off. They’ve been together for 3 months now and things are relatively good between them. With their busy schedules they hardly have time to argue and Kevin believes Scotty to be happy. So what is he so angry about?
“No, I have no idea.” He replies carefully, racking his brain trying to remember what it is he could have possibly done to upset Scotty like this. “I just wanted us to go out tonight and have some fun. I am sorry if you think that I pushed something on you. If you don’t like the restaurant…?” He knows it was his personal choice, but what is the point of surprising your boyfriend with a romantic surprise dinner if you ask him upfront where he wants to go and spoil the… uh… surprise?
“It’s not this place. It’s fine… It’s the company I’m in.” Scotty replies coldly and Kevin is really lost for a second, because Scotty is not joking (would have been a bad joke), he is awfully serious.
“What have I done? Why are you mad at me?”.
“Tell me what you did today.” Scotty answers in a demanding voice, his anger is written all over his face now.
“What I did? …. I got up. Went to work. Prepared a case. Ran an errand for Sarah. Spent the afternoon in the courtroom. Picked you up for dinner….” Kevin says, but the look on Scotty’s face doesn’t change. Kevin gets the distinct impression that Scotty wants to hear something special, but he doesn’t know what that is.
“Kevin… Tell. Me. The. Truth.” Scotty IS furious and his entire attitude conveys that he’s doing his utmost to restrain himself.
“What truth? I already told you the truth.”
“You’re lying.”
“I’m not.”
“I’m done. I want to go home.” Scotty throws his own napkin on the table now and gets up.
“I’m going to pay.” Kevin says.
“Stop acting like that! I’ll pay!” Scotty’s voice makes it clear he doesn’t want to be contradicted, so Kevin doesn’t.
*****
The ride back home is awkward and terribly quiet. Scotty’s face is not hiding the smoldering anger he’s controlling and slowly Kevin’s concern shifts to anger. Once the door of their loft closes behind them, Kevin lashes out:
“Alright! No more games! What the hell is going on?”
“You are not honest with me!”
“About what?”
“Kevin, I know! Charles saw you and called me and I know! And it’s alright,.. just stop lying to me about it.”
“I am thrilled that you’re okay with it, but I still have no idea what you are talking about.”
Something changes in Scotty’s body. He suddenly looks defeated, and he nearly begs.
“Kev, don’t do this to me, please. Don’t treat me like I’m some fool.”
But Kevin is not impressed, not ready to accept the change in Scotty’s attitude, he remains angry.
“Then why don’t you do what you do best and treat me like I am the village idiot and tell me what is going on.”
“Charles saw you.”
“You already said that, but I have no idea who Charles is and why I should care that he saw me.”
“He’s a friend of mine and he works down town and he saw you enter the church. You were seeing Jason.”
“Wait a minute. THIS is about Jason?” Kevin is too astounded. “But I didn’t…..”
“I don’t care that you saw Jason, I really don’t. Just stop pretending it didn’t happen.”
“Excuse me? What didn’t happen?.... Do you believe I have an affair with Jason? Behind your back?”
“Your family is not exactly unknown with the term infidelity.”
“I am SO going to pretend I didn’t hear that!” Kevin turns around and walks in the direction of their bedroom when Scotty makes it loud and clear and impossible for Kevin to ignore.
“Your family is not above cheating, Kevin. I mean, your father, Kitty, Tommy, Justin … you.. twice… that I know of….” He lets the accusation hang in the air. Kevin stops for a second, his back remains turned to Scotty. Then he goes into the bedroom.
Scotty stays behind, trembling in anger. He hates fighting, but he also hates getting lied at. Within two minutes Kevin shows up again, his overnight bag on his shoulder.
“I’m going to mom. I can sleep in my room there.”
“What? ….” Scotty is shocked, especially by Kevin’s blank face.
“If and when you ready to have a normal conversation with me about this, I’ll be at mom’s place.”
“Kevin….?”
“I can’t send you away, so I’m the one leaving. But one thing, Mister Scotty Wandell…. The only one here, having an obsessive relationship with Jason, is you !
And with those words Kevin leaves, slamming the door behind him and leaving Scotty standing in their living room.
