Chapter 16 Back for good

*****

Matthew leans against the doorpost and sips his coffee. There’s a little breeze and he enjoys the cooling effect on his skin. A car approaches his ranch. He sees immediately who it is and he smiles, as he puts his cup inside and returns outside to meet his guest.

“Wow! When you said it was in the middle of nowhere. You meant in the middle of nowhere.” Luke laughs with awe on his face. Around him he sees nothing but corn-fields and somewhere amidst them a large ranch that apparently belongs to Matthew.
“It’s good to see you. Glad you decided to come up here.” Matthew greets.

There’s a quick hug and Matthew helps Luke with some of his luggage.
“Shall we put these away first?” Matthew asks and Luke agrees, so Mattthew leads Luke up the stairs and into a room that is simple, nice and cozy. A bed, a chair, a wardrobe and a small washing-basin, just big enough to wash your hands.

But it all smells fresh and it looks comfortable.
“I like this.” Luke says with a gentle smile.
“It’s all very simple. I haven’t finished it all just yet…. Wanna see?” Matthew’s enthusiasm makes his face light up and Luke smiles as well.

Matthew shows him the bathroom (such warm blue and white colors), his bedroom (which doesn’t differ that much from Luke’s), the two other rooms (just in case Luke doesn’t like the room Matthew has chosen, but he does), the kitchen (very large, with a huge dining-table-turned to semi-office-desk) and the living-room (very manly with lots of wood).

“Where are my manners?.. Do you want some coffee?” Matthew points at the freshly made coffee. “I also have tea? Anything else? Though it's not even noon.” Matthew asks.
“Coffee will do.” Luke replies, surprised that Matthew seems a bit nervous. “It is alright with you that I stay here, right? I don’t want to impose.”

“You’re not. It’s just that you’re the first person I’ve talked to in a about a month. Face-to-face, I mean. I’ve spoken with people on the phone and I skype, text, tweet and whatever else there is, but to actually sit down with someone… It’s been a while.”
“I see. Is everything alright?”

“Yes and no. My agents are in shock! I’ve told them I want to quit acting.”
“What?!” Luke nearly drops his coffee. “Why?!”
“I never really like working for tv. I loved the vibe of having an audience. But with the last show, I noticed that my heart wasn’t in it the anymore.

It was all so exciting and new at the start, but then it faded and I felt restricted. I was suffocating. And then I came here and I felt like I could breathe again. I fell in love with this place all over again. You see, I've had the happiest time of my life was right here.

My parents divorced when I was very young. My father abandoned my mom and me, and my mom couldn’t take care of me. So, she left me behind with my grand-parents. Right here on the ranch. I’ve had the most amazing childhood, thanks to my grandparents. This is the place I see when I hear the word ‘happiness’. And I want to come back here for good. This is my home. I don’t want to move anymore.”

“Lucky you.” Luke replies quietly. “I love this place.”
“You’re young. You’ll get bored with the place soon enough and you’ll be looking for some excuse to run away, as fast as you can.” Matthew teases.
“I doubt it.” Luke replies in all seriousness.

Chapter 17 Living together

*****

Late spring turns into full summer and Luke sees the corn-fields turn from green to yellow and he enjoys every day at the ranch. He was supposed to have stayed a few days only, but he’s glad that Matthew has extended the invitation and the ‘few days’ had turned into weeks and he can see why Matthew loves it here.

It’s peaceful and pretty. Sometimes perhaps a bit too quiet, but he doesn’t really care. In the mornings they get up early and Luke helps Matthew with building an annex to the house. It’s physically very hard work, but he enjoys it. Just that feeling of building something with your own hands, it is an amazing feeling.

However, after one o’clock in the afternoon, it’s almost impossible to work outside. The sun is too hot and the heat is just suffocating. It’s the time they use to sit on the porch, in the shadow, cool drinks close at hand. The large table gives both of them space. Matthew reads scripts that are sent by his agent, with the hope that he’ll change his mind and Luke tries to write a script of his own.

They work well together. They laugh. They have vivid arguments, where they sometimes have to agree to disagree. They are like an old married couple. They've gotten to each other well, they talk a lot, but they have no sex, because they sleep in different beds. Luke smiles when he thinks about this explanation.

The days actually pass mostly peaceful and he knows, that he hates it, that he has to leave, but he slowly starts to see that he really has no other choice anymore.

Their relationship is strictly, almost painfully, platonic. Matthew seems to go out of his way to avoid all physical contact with Luke. For all his in-your-face treatment of Luke during the time that Luke was Chad, Matthew now approaches him with an almost Victorian restraint.

Luke doesn’t know why and he doesn’t dare to ask, afraid he’ll insult Matthew or perhaps would give Matthew the wrong idea about him. And something in Luke tells him he should be happy with the politeness that Matthew shows, but, strangely enough, it is something that has become a big problem to Luke.

A problem that gets worse with every passing day. He first noticed that strange fluttering feeling inside, when Matthew smiled at him. It had confused him. Then he had realized, that seeing the sweat glisten on Matthew’s body as he hammered nails into place, had made him feel light-headed with a physical desire he had never even had for Chad.

Whenever Matthew took off his shirt, which happened inevitably every day, he had longed to let his fingers play with the hair on Matthew’s chest. It had become even more obvious to him when, not long after, they both reached for the same glue-gun and the touch of their fingers had felt like static electricity running through his body.

He seems to be even more aware of Matthew’s body, now that he’s creating such a distance, than he was that night they slept together. His strong feelings confuse him and he knows he has to leave, while he still has his dignity. He knows that he’s close to making a fool of himself. because at daytime he can hide his feelings, but at night….

… At night, he lets his hand slip under the sheet and he touches himself, dreaming that it’s Matthew’s hand touching him, playing with him. And as his hand moves faster, he can almost feel Matthew’s lips on his, and he jerks even harder, until he finally comes, whispering Matthew’s name and what he doesn’t know is that a two doors away his name is on Matthew’s lips.

Chapter 18 Making out

*****

Matthew blames the heat for his tiredness. The last few days have been hot. At night the sheets cling to his body and he’s too dazed to fall asleep. Yesterday, the weather forecast predicted rain, but he hasn’t seen any evidence of it yet. The sky is so blue that it hurts the eyes and the sun is merciless in that sky.

“We should get out of the sun. Go home and cool off a bit. You’ll catch a sunstroke.” Matthew hears Luke’s warning and sighs. Luke is right, of course. He grabs the garden hose to make the ground wet, so that it’s softer to put the post in. He needs those posts to build a new fence.

“Just a few more minutes.” He says.
“You really need to cool off.” Luke says again and Matthew realizes, too late, that there’s a warning in Luke’s voice. He reacts in shock as a stream of cold water hits his back, where Luke had pointed the garden-hose.

He hears Luke’s laughter behind him and he turns to him.
“You! You’re so going to get it.” Luke runs away, but Matthew is a lot faster than Luke expected and within seconds Luke is on the ground and Matthew tickles him merciless.
“I surrender…” Luke laughs and Matthew lets himself fall down on the ground next to Luke and then turns to him.

“You have water on your face.” He says, brushing a drop of water away. However, his finger lingers on Luke’s cheek. Afraid to show how much he wants this touch, Luke closes his eyes. He can feel Matthew’s fingers trace his face and his hand covers Matthew’s.

He hesitantly presses his face closer to Matthew’s hand, as if he’s inviting Matthew to go on. Matthew’s thumb caresses Luke’s lips and they part under the soft touch. There’s warm breath on his face, followed by lips caressing his own. Slowly more pressure is added and with a sigh Luke replies to the kiss.

The kiss doesn’t seem to end. It’s as if both are afraid that the end of the kiss, will be the end of them. Matthew pulls Luke closer and Luke’s body starts to cover Matthew’s. Without breaking the kiss too much, Luke’s hand finally dares to search Matthew’s body.

Matthew tugs at Luke’s shirt until it slips over Luke’s head and Matthew throws it to his side. His own shirt soon lands on top of Luke’s. They continue to kiss until Matthew finally breaks the kiss.

“Luke, I don’t want to play…” Matthew whispers. “No games. No one-night thing. Nothing casual…”
“No games.” Luke confirms, though he doesn’t dare to believe that Matthew is actually serious about him.

“I’m serious.” Matthew replies, as if he read Luke’s mind. “I really like you. A lot. I never meant to hurt you. I never even considered the possibility that you could become more interested in me.” There’s a shy look on his face after this confession and Luke smiles.
“Are you asking me to be your … boyfriend?” Luke asks surprised.

“Gosh, I feel like I’m fourteen again.” Matthew laughs with an embarrassed grin.
“The answer is ‘yes’.” Luke says.
“Yes?” Matthew asks, just to be sure.
“Yes.” Luke answers with certainty and he lowers his head again to kiss Matthew.

Chapter 19 Sensuality

*****

It’s the first sound of thunder that wakes Luke up from his sleep. He feels stiff and cold, so he lifts his head and sees Matthew asleep beside him. After his yes, they had continued to kiss, extended their touches until it all had lead to a very satisfactorily conclusion.

They had remained in each other’s arms, laughing and gazing at each other like two teenagers in love for the first time, until the combination of warmth, love, satisfaction and the shimmering silence of the afternoon had made them drift off to sleep. Luke looks up at the sky.
“Matthew! Wake up! We need to get back to the ranch!”

The insistence in Luke’s voice immediately wakes Matthew. As he gets up he sees the sky darkening with heavy clouds. They quickly pick up the tools and run to the shed. Matthew bars the shed so the wind doesn’t have free access to it and then he and Luke quickly return to the house.

The wind in picking up and they can’t go that fast anymore. On the porch, Matthew stops Luke to give him his instructions.
“Go inside and close all the windows upstairs, I’ll run around the house and clear up what I can. This storm will be fast and heavy.” He yells.

Luke nods and disappears into the house. He runs from room to room and most windows are closed within seconds. The first raindrops start to fall. It isn’t until he looks out the window in Matthew’s room, that he sees Matthew struggle against the wind and he realises the strenght of the storm.

He doesn’t hesitate and runs out again to help Matthew. They are in the immediate path of the wind and it cuts Luke’s breath away. The raindrops are big, wet and warm, but the temperature starts to drop very fast as the storm blows the heat away.

“One more chair and everything will be inside!” Matthew yells. Finally the door slams closed behind them. It’s dark and cold inside. Luke can hear Matthew’s teeth chatter. They are both out of breath and soaking wet.

“I suggest that next time we don't fall asleep when the weather report says stormy weather!” Matthew says, out of breath.
“I second that.” Luke laughs.

“I think we better get out of these wet clothes.” Matthew suggests. Luke nods and he follows Matthew up the stairs. In the bathroom they peel off their wet clothes and dry each other off, slowly getting warmer again. Matthew whispers a ‘thanks for your help’ before he claims Luke’s lips.

Towels land on the floor as Luke surrenders and lets himself be guided to the bed, where he takes the lead again, by pushing Matthew down on his back, but when his body covers Matthew’s it’s no longer clear who’s in charge.

Their kisses are deep. Their touches go from soft and hesitant to demanding and purposeful. When Matthew breaks the kiss to reach for the nightstand, Luke knows what he wants. He kisses as trail from Matthew’s lips to his shoulder, moves down his chest to his belly.

He can hear Matthew hold his breath, there’s a whispered ‘please’, followed by a gasp when Luke has his first taste of Matthew’s cock. The thunder makes the house the tremble, but Matthew isn’t aware of anything else but that warm mouth on him and those long fingers finding their way inside him, preparing him for what is to come.

The touches are careful, but determined to reach their goal and soon enough Matthew begs Luke to move on and eventually Luke knows he can no longer postpone it. He watches how Matthew winces at first penetration, but it doesn’t take long. Luke is as careful as he can be, but he can’t wait anymore.

“I can’t go on.” He nearly cries as his body demands release.
“Then don’t.” The sigh of relief that Luke makes is heart-breaking, but then he starts to move, the thrusts become more powerful and Luke closes his eyes. The thunder roars outside, but he can only concentrate on how he moves inside Matthew.

Toes curl to get grip. There’s a need to get leverage. The rain clatters against the windows. It’s loud and rhythmic, but neither of them hears it. Nails dig into skin. Holds tighten. For a few seconds the room is illuminated by the lightning that flashes in the sky and  Luke can the pure desire on Matthew’s face.

Lips kiss. Hands touch. Luke gasps when he no longer control himself. The storm seems to be right over their house. Then next thunderclap makes the house shudder, but Luke already lost himself. Matthew smiles, when Luke lets himself fall back on the bed and he wraps the sheet around Luke, so that Luke can be safely, and satisfied, in his arms.

Chapter 20 Honeymoon

*****

“Of all the places, I could have taken you to, on our honeymoon….” Matthew hums in Luke’s ear. Yes, it’s true. It’s been a year since that stormy night where they had made love for the first time and it’s also been 3 months since Matthew proposed to him and 2 days since they got married.

Matthew had told him to pick the place for the honeymoon. Any place he wanted. London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Berlin. Or would he rather go to Sydney, Melbourne? Perhaps Tokyo or Moscow? … Rio de Janeiro? A cruise in the Caribbean or somewhere in a hotel in the Rocky Mountains? All Luke had to do was say the word.

Luke had looked at his options, but, in the end, he knew there was only one place he wanted to spend his honeymoon with Matthew and that place is right here, on their ranch, where they could sleep in their own bed. It’s where he finds his peace and where he knows that he’s loved.

He just loves the place and he’s always eager to be here alone with Matthew, spending time listening to the radio, reading books and scripts and just be together with him.

They had both recognized that the reality of their lives was, that they needed an income and in order to get that, they needed to be back in the city. Eight months ago both he and Matthew returned to the stage, this time playing together in the same play, a master-plan made up by Matthew’s agents, who saw the marketing-potential of their relationship.

Their live in the city had been active, to say the least, and Luke had loved it to be back. The nervous energy, the parties, the people, the traffic, the noise, the never-ending movement. It had all been fun and it had all fascinated him.

But he’s glad to be back in the natural silence of this place and in this wonderful house, where Matthew had carried him over the threshold and where they spent their first night in each other's arms after making love for the first time as a married couple.

“Penny for your thoughts..” Matthew says, kissing the back of Luke’s neck. Luke smiles.
“I love you.”
“That’s fortunate. Because I love you too.”

“When I was with Chad, I believed that I was as happy as I could ever get… And now, I know that it was nothing compared to what I feel right now. And I have you to thank for that.” Luke hears Matthew’s soft laughter behind him and then he feels Matthew’s hands caress his belly.

“I never believed you could become mine, but I wanted to set you free from Chad… You deserved someone better than him.”
“And I got him.” Luke replies, turning in Matthew’s arms to kiss him and pull him closer. “So how about it if you would remind me of what couples do in their honeymoon?”

“Again? I already reminded you of that after breakfast.” Matthew laughs, but Luke rubs his body against Matthew’s in no uncertain terms. “Alright… If you insist!” Matthew pants.
"I insist. " Luke smiles and they kiss tenderly.
